1947年、福岡県久留米市生まれ。 東京藝術大学名誉教授。アートディレクター。 1971年、東京藝術大学卒業。 東北芸術工科大学教授を勤めた後、2003年より東京芸術大学デザイン科教授に就任。 2015年退官。 東京藝術2年の時にサクマ製菓のキャンディ「いちごみるく」のデザインを手がける。1972年、東京地下鉄の路線図をデザインを作る。 1974年、日本べリエールアートセンターを設立。 70年代から80年代にかけて営団地下鉄(現：東京メトロ)のマナーポスターをシリーズで手がける。 1983年より三和酒類焼酎「いいちこ」の商品企画、ポスターなどのアートディレクションを手がけ、固有のデザイン世界を創作してきた。 季誌 iichiko 監修。 CMのテーマソングにはビリー・バンバンの楽曲を使っているが、2009年には、新製品「日田全麹」CMソングに『また君に恋してる』を坂本冬美にカバーさせ、大ヒット。 2000年グッドデザイン賞、2001年、2004年、2012年、ナショナル・ジオグラフィック広告賞（アートディレクター、写真家として）、日本パッケージデザイン大賞、大賞などを受賞。 著者「河北秀也のデザイン原論」新曜社、「デザインの場所」東京藝術大学出版会、など。
